DESCRIPTION: Wing length 7 to 9.25mm.  An early flying species with males sporting pale thoracic hairs and heavy black markings on the scutellum. The yellow spots on the abdomen are somewhat reduced. Females are similar with more obvious abdominal markings, extensive black on the scutellum and a narrow dusting on the frons which does not meet in the centre. The apical half of the front tibia is dark. BEHAVIOUR: Frequently found on Willow catkins and Wild Cherry blossom in spring and when the sun is out can be located basking on tree trunks. DISTRIBUTION: Found throughout the UK. HABITAT: Deciduous woodland rides and glades and hedgerows. PERIOD: Late March to October.
